WooCommerce
A WordPress plugin that reports orders, shipments and started checkouts to Engage, adds a WhatsApp consent checkbox to checkout, and can add a "Chat with us" button to your store.
Install
- In the Engage dashboard: Settings, API keys, Create key, named after your store.
- Settings, Website, WooCommerce: download the plugin.
- In WordPress: Plugins, Add New, Upload Plugin. Choose the zip and activate it.
- Settings, Engage: paste the key, save, and press Check connection.
- In Engage, switch on workflows for the events below.
It needs WordPress 6.0, PHP 7.4 and WooCommerce 8.0 or later, and works with both the block and the classic checkout.
What it sends
| Field | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
order.created | order placed | orderNumber, total, currency, orderStatusUrl - and optIn when the consent box was ticked. |
order.shipped | status reached | When the order reaches the status chosen in the plugin settings (Completed by default). Adds trackingNumber, trackingUrl and carrier from WooCommerce Shipment Tracking when you use it. |
checkout.started | number typed | Once a shopper at checkout has entered a phone number: cartUrl, total, currency. Once per cart. |
Numbers typed the local way - 0803 000 0001 - get the calling code of the billing country. A number that cannot be placed is left out rather than guessed. Make the phone field required at checkout so every order has one.
The consent checkbox
“Send me order updates and offers on WhatsApp”, unticked by default, with wording you can change. When a shopper ticks it, the order reaches Engage with an optIn that quotes the words they agreed to, and cart reminders and offers can reach them from then on.
Cart reminders and first-time shoppers
A cart reminder is a marketing message, and Engage sends marketing only with consent on record. A shopper who leaves before ticking the box, and never agreed before, will not get one - the workflow run shows why it stopped. That is WhatsApp's rule, and it protects your number's quality rating.
When Engage cannot be reached
Checkout never waits for Engage. Each event goes through WooCommerce's scheduler and is sent in the background; a failed delivery is retried after 1, 4, 9 and 16 minutes. Every attempt is listed under Tools, Scheduled Actions, group “engage”, and anything Engage refused is logged under WooCommerce, Status, Logs, source “engage”.
The chat button
Turn it on in Settings, Engage with your WhatsApp business number. On a product page, the first message names the product, so the conversation in your inbox starts with what the shopper was looking at.
